Pasadena Roof Orchestra
The Pasadena Roof Orchestra was founded on November 3rd 1969.
John Arthy had placed an advertisement enquiring after dance band music. A lady in Manchester said she might be able to help. Later that day, a bakery van from John’s family business was travelling back down from Manchester to London replete with 2000 original arrangements from the 20’and 30’s.
The first tune on the large pile of arrangements, was Harry Warrens ‘Home in Pasadena’
the “ roof” bit, came from the fact that in the20s and 30s many hotels had roof gardens and of course, roof orchestras.
The orchestra turned professional in 1975, which coincided with an astronomical almost overnight success in Germany. It has subsequently appeared around the world, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, from Berlin to Hong Kong, via Helsinki Dublin Abu Dhabi, Istanbul all the way to the USA (five tours).

The Myddleton Folk Sessions is a lovely way to spend your late afternoon. Played in the standard folk format where likeminded musicians can join in the session, the music takes inspiration from the Scottish, Irish and English folk traditions. Led by Gregory Scotland (violin) and Sol Grimshaw (Guitar).

Immy Churchill Quintet
This month we are featuring Immy Churchill, a jazz singer and songwriter who studied at The Royal Academy of Music. Immy has played with the likes of Norma Winstone and Dave Holland, and has recently been involved in Jon Hendricks’ Miles Ahead. Her influences range from Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to Ella Fitzgerald and Norma Winstone, providing her with a wide breadth of musical knowledge that sets her apart as a vocalist.

Their latest album, Got A Little Rhythm!, showcases their unique flair, featuring swinging violin, lively guitars, and a rich double bass.

Panama Picnic featuring Gustavo - Ryde Gypsy Jazz Festival
The Panama Picnic Orchestra was a project born from father and son JC Grimshaw and Sol Grimshaw. During the lockdown they wrote, recorded and released an album of all their original material which created the Panama Picnic Orchestra.
The band draws their inspiration from Hot Gypsy Swing, Calypso, Latin, and Dark Mambo and have crafted a set of all new exciting and emotive originals in their album ‘100 years in the making’. They bring the rhythms and textures of the vintage era to the present day with a captivating and thrilling flare and energy.

She has been described as a “rising star”, striding out in the London jazz scene and playing her own original music at venues such as The Green Note, Pizza Express Holborn and The Vortex, alongside touring Germany and Switzerland as a side person. Other venues include Ronnie Scott’s, The Crazy Coqs, The Royal Albert Hall and The Jazz Cafe. Immy Churchill looks to embrace not only the lyrical quality of being a singer but also the joys of singing wordlessly and improvising. Her influences range from Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to Ella Fitzgerald and Norma Winstone, providing her with a wide breadth of musical knowledge that sets her apart as a vocalist.

Fidelio Hot Club
The Fidelio Hot Club draws inspiration from the hot jazz of the 30s and 40s but also heavily draws upon the classical music world. Led by Ray Rafols on violin the group arranges famous classical pieces of music into the format of violin, 2 acoustic guitars and double bass. Whilst still keeping its roots in the gypsy jazz sound world.

Harry Diplock Trio
At the forefront of Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz in the UK, Harry Diplock is making waves as a truly remarkable guitarist. His passion for the music, deeply influenced by the vibrant Parisian jazz scene, is infectious, and his versatility is astounding. Originally from Devon, Harry began his journey as a guitar builder, but quickly became a prominent figure in the UK jazz scene. He has played at some of London’s most iconic jazz venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho Jazz Club, and 606 Club, as well as prestigious European venues like Le Duc Des Lombards and Torino Jazz Club.

Played in the standard folk format where likeminded musicians can join in the session, the music takes inspiration from the Scottish, Irish and English folk traditions. The Myddleton Arms Gypsy Jazz sessions are a favourite for many with acoustic guitars and double bass in the front room of the cosy Myddleton Arms Pub.
